Working toward a Safe and Healthy Future for Every Newfoundland
August, 2021
NewfCare:
RESEARCH & RESCUE
Facebook recently transferred over $13,000.00 received from 366 individual
donors in response to 90 fundraisers from 2018-present to the NCA
Charitable Trust. We are reviewing the data provided to make every effort
to acknowledge everyone’s individual donations and fundraising efforts
through the Facebook birthday fundraiser tool and other initiatives.
Unfortunately some of that data is no longer available and we do not have
access to your individual contact information to reach out with a personal
thank you. Please know that all of us at the NCA Charitable Trust, the NCA
and especially the dedicated rescue volunteers and hard working health
researchers who are helping to create a safe and healthy future for every
Newfoundland appreciate the trust you have placed in us by sharing your
generous donations, and we are humbled by the number of supporters from all
over the world who have the same passion for these gentle giants.

A Friend In Deed
“Arlo” was just six months old when he was hit by a car and sustained a
pelvic fracture. His owners rushed him to a northwest Michigan clinic for
care. Based on his x-rays Dr. Selena Molnar determined that specialized
surgery was required, estimated to be $5,000.00. Due to the costs his
owners relinquished Arlo to Dr. Molnar and she contacted NCA Rescue.
NCA Rescue committed the funding for Arlo’s surgery since his case met NCA
Rescue’s criteria – a sound diagnosis and a good prognosis. Dr. Molnar
arranged Arlo’s surgery at a veterinary specialty clinic in Flint, Michigan
over 200 miles south and volunteered to transport Arlo to the specialty
surgical center – 7 hours roundtrip - and to donate her costs.
“Arlo” is recovering and has been adopted by a retired veterinary
technician who has rehabilitated and adopted several Great Danes and
Newfoundlands. Part of his physical therapy is wading into the water at the
family’s lake cabin and lounging on the deck with his Dane and Newf friends.
Generous donations to NCA Rescue provide veterinary care for Newfoundlands
in Rescue.
Our breed has many friends indeed.

Exploring the Broader Application of a New Cancer Drug
Jaime F. Modiano, VMD, PhD, University of Minnesota, D18CA-050
RESULTS: Promising New Drug May Work Against Multiple Cancers
Morris Animal Foundation-funded researchers at the University of Minnesota
had previously found that a promising new drug, called eBAT, improved
survival in a subset of dogs with hemangiosarcoma, a devastating cancer
with limited treatment options. It also worked well against mammary cancer
in cats. Now, the team wants to know if eBAT could be equally effective for
the treatment of other incurable pet cancers, specifically aggressive dog
cancers.

Study Participation Moves Research Forward
AKC Canine Health Foundation
One of the greatest challenges for the researchers working to prevent,
treat and cure canine disease is recruiting participants in research
projects. There are many research studies in need of participation and you
can view them on our website.
https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=00110EliUPmfrtyk6LctCjbFqTbRaW9nNcn0FhvLQIWGBrxLb5-qUBbRGVlxNoIzO7oEmaZZDdt-uWAkqDhqzSBXPN-2jI5iqYL4IU7MQscCcW343KXyQ-9uqHVwJD7fBtgIKgsf78DAeN_i5e-YOQRtMpKGLuXIbLFs467OgZ9Lrm_14-w-r-uH2-OUYHIp0Kl&c=9L-C5iq5VaFGR7qY4_Vz8IZ0-ICYtRzfSmxd1gjQeP_tSdXfy9NOLA==&ch=_6-UYrxzpp9qLgNuZ6Xz9Mte8wERCo-qklVBd2PhK5IpYfm9qWq81w==
Each
study has unique requirements, so please reach out to the listed contact on
the linked participation page if you have questions regarding a specific
project.
Please don't forget that samples are always being accepted by the Canine
Health Information Center DNA Repository.

AKC Canine Health Foundation Conference Goes Virtual
RALEIGH, NC (August 13, 2021) - The AKC Canine Health Foundation, a
non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the health of all dogs,
hosts its National Parent Club Canine Health Conference this weekend,
August 13-15. Due to ongoing challenges for travel and large gatherings
during the COVID-19 pandemic, dog club representatives, researchers,
veterinarians, students, and more will gather virtually for the first time
in the conference’s 24-year history. The biennial event, sponsored by
Purina, allows investigators to share the latest findings in canine health
research directly with the AKC Parent Clubs and dog lovers that support the
research, as well as the veterinary professionals and dog owners that can
directly apply the findings to dogs in their care.
The 2021 Conference includes a focus on One Heath, a concept recognizing
that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and
our shared environment. Lectures covering a One Health approach to atopic
dermatitis and environmental cancer risk in dogs and people are scheduled.
The keynote address features 2021 Asa Mays, DVM Excellence in Canine Health
Research Award recipient, Dr. Cindy Otto, discussing findings from the 9/11
Medical Surveillance Study. This investigation, started in 2001, has
examined the physical and behavioral consequences of search and rescue dog
deployment to the 9/11 disaster sites, providing unique insights into the
human-animal bond and differences in the health effects for canine and
human responders.
“The AKC Canine Health Foundation is excited to offer this year’s
conference to a wider audience through the virtual format,” says Andrea
Fiumefreddo, MS, CHF Director of Programs & Operations. “Education is a
pillar of our mission and the opportunity to share CHF-funded outcomes
directly with those caring for dogs in all facets is important to move the
needle for canine health.”
Select 2021 AKC Canine Health Foundation National Parent Club Canine Health
Conference lectures will be available on a pay-per-view basis through the
AKC Canine College at www.caninecollege.akc.org
