I have Neighbor down the road with chow mix. He/she has gotten out of yard a few times now and gone after mine when I walk down street. I keep a squirt bottle of lemon juice with my poop bags. I've squirted it twice in mouth now. Runs home then... ??? Owners are never home when I stop at house...

Yes,  bear spray!   Thanks for reminding me.   I keep mine in my dogs supplies bag but will start clipping it on my hip.

It will wear off after a few minutes, and if you happen to spray your dog they will be pretty uncomfortable for a few minutes.  It works, and may very well save you and your dog from serious injury.  A bottle of water poured over the sprayed area helps to dissipate it.

Hi,

How do you break up a dog fight?

Some stupid black lab off leash (sigh) just tried to attack Big AL. All the while the owner was saying "he scares a lot of people but he's very friendly."  The dog had his teeth bared growling and snarling with his shackles up! Good grief. Big AL was a gentleman and didn't even twitch. Good boy Big AL. ! The dog lunged at AL. And then the owner grabbed him and said "sorry."

So the rest of the walk, I started thinking about what should I have done if the dog had actually attacked violently. How do you break up a dog fight?

I agree with all that has been said.

Building on Jeff’s comment – don’t even try to separate the dogs with your own hands.

More importantly, make sure you know where your nearest emergency vet is located.

My recommendation – if you have a camera (cell phone) take a picture and make sure to tell the other owner that you will be sending them the vet bill and/or suing them.  Seriously.  And if you are worried about your dog being the attacker, go to training to avoid it.  Finally, I am very careful to keep my distance from dogs I don’t know, even when the owner says “can my dog meet your dog” I usually say “no” because of experiences like Big Al’s – when the other dogs get close and see how big the Newf really is, many of them snap, growl and even bite out of fear.  Of course, those owners blame the Newf every time.

Thank you! That's good advice.

Big AL has never been the aggressor, but has been snapped at a couple times. And even after a dog has snapped at him, he maintains his pleasant demeanor. It sort of amazes me that many dog owners do not read their dogs behavior correctly.

Bared teeth, shackles raised, and growling indicate aggression, not friendly behavior. How the owner of the lab thought his dog was friendly is beyond me. That dog will bite someone. And for the love of Pete, is it really that hard to put a leash on your dog?!!!!

Someone else suggested carrying an air horn. The loud noise can create enough of a distraction to break up a fight.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm going to snuggle with Big AL and appreciate his sweetness.

There is away to do it mainly. With newfs it would be hard' Techinque we use at the shelter is wrap your arms around the groin of the dog pull up at a angle. It works great. Used with pit bulls fighting. We volunteers let them get to close. I have broken up few really nasty fights.

I have had the misfortune of trying to break up a dogfight with my bare hands, mainly because my dog was on the ground getting his throat chewed badly and I had to do something quick.  Long story short, my thumb got stuck in the attacking dogs mouth and he clamped down and wouldn't let go.  Luckily my parents were there and after lots of kicking and a water hose down his mouth he let go.  My thumb was badly broken, and still has limited movement after this happened over 30 years ago.  My  advice is to carry a can of bear spray, and if you have to use it, spray it in the face of the dog you want to spray.  It stings once it hits the eyes, mouth and nose and should stop things pretty quick.

Karen and Big AL who really is friendly unlike the black lab!

There is away to do it mainly. With newfs it would be hard' Techinque we use at the shelter is wrap your arms around the groin of the dog pull up at a angle. It works great. Used with pit bulls fighting. We volunteers let them get to close. I have broken up few really nasty fights. ________________________________ From: NewfLink <newflink-bounces@nsnewf.org> on behalf of Karen Butler via NewfLink <newflink@nsnewf.org> Sent: Saturday, February 4, 2017 5:20 PM To: Northstar Newfoundland Club Cc: Karen Butler Subject: Re: [NewfLink] Breaking up a dog fight Thank you!
