Lazy Summer Days Ahead
Exciting New Programs Coming Your Way!
In order to be more responsive to inquiries from prospective Newfoundland owners, to be more inclusive with our breeder community and to recognize the diligent work of our dedicated preservation breeders, the NCA has been working to develop new outreach methods, and revitalize some of our existing programs. Several committees, along with the Board of Directors, collaborated on these initiatives.
Create a Puppy Referral Listing Program that will be available to all NCA members to list planned or existing litters for placement. This function is currently being built into the NCA Member Portal. Referral Listing will be available to potential puppy buyers through the Newfoundland Ambassador Program and the Breeder Referral Hotline.
Create a Breeder of Distinction Program to recognize individuals who have become respected breeders, displayed in the Hall of Fame section of the website. All current Breeders List members will be grandfathered into the program and new applicants will be able to apply. The program will feature sections to list Emeritus Breeders who have retired from breeding as well as In Memorium for Breeders who have passed.
Revitalize the Breeder Education Mentor Program through outreach to all Breeders of Distinction to encourage them to participate, provide additional resources and training in adult education and mentorship to all mentor participants, and develop additional educational resources for prospective and fledgling breeders.
“Correct body coat is important to the Newfoundland. Emphasis, however, should be on density rather than length. An overly long or shaggy coat would collect snow and ice and would not be serviceable in winter weather. In the winter, in northern climates, the body should be covered with a fine wooly undercoat. The outercoat should be coarse, straight and lie flat. If brushed the wrong way it should tend to fall back into place. A fluffy or wooly outercoat would not shed water and is strictly against the standard.”
Concerns Over Coat
Good joints, including hips and elbows, are important for good structure. Mother Nature is an exacting parent who does not allow her children to survive with poor structure. No bears walk for long with hip dysplasia or bad elbows. They usually starve to death before they breed. Dogs do not experience such exacting environments. Most dogs have life pretty cushy and can reach breeding age despite physical disabilities. Our dogs and we pay for this through hip dysplasia and other problems.

A Voice of Her Own- Becoming Emily Dickinson
Barbara Dana has created magic with this novel that imagines the childhood of Emily Dickinson. The language is so delightful, the tone so true, that you'll be convinced young Emily is speaking directly to you. A bonus is the impressive presence of Carlo, the young poet's beloved Newfoundland dog who was her constant companion for 16 years. I've loved reading and rereading this book and have purchased multiple copies to be given away as gifts--most recently to my nephew's brilliant 16-year-old daughter who just discovered Dickinson and wants to write poetry. Barbara Dana and Emily Dickinson are an irresistible combo! - Robert McDowell

Nutrition Basics
Canine nutrition is an area of growing concern for dog owners in general and giant breed owners in particular. Giants breed puppies will experience a similar rate of growth in a single year to what humans experience over 20 years. Even a short time spent eating an unbalanced diet can have implications for long term growth and development.
"In order to live, a dog must eat. How long the dog lives, as well as health, immune system, behavior and temperament, the ability to reproduce successfully and to recover from trauma, all depend on what is eaten." - Wendy Volhard

Fun and Games
Much like a child, your puppy needs to have some fun! How about celebrating his six-month birthday. Invite your family (yes, they will think you are not quite all there, but - why not!). Make him a cake from cottage cheese or yogurt surrounded by puppy cookies. The candle can be a rolled rawhide stick or one of the "flavored" jerky-type sticks found in the grocery store pet section. Sing him/her Happy Birthday and give him presents - a new rubber ball or fuzzy chew toy. End the celebration with a phone call to your local training school enrolling him in obedience classes.

Your NCA Board of Directors recognizes the value and prevalence of social networking systems, such as Facebook™, email lists, and blogs. Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about owners, breeders, The Newfoundland Club of America and/or Newfoundland fanciers.
