NCA e-Notes May 2020
A few days ago, Consie and I were walking with Cladina and Kaministiquia along county highway 88 and watched a neighbor, who had just come home from work, face off with his yellow lab on either side of a basswood tree in their yard. He was slightly stooped with his hands on his knees and bounced a few steps to the right. The lab half bowed and bounced to the left. The man feinted and bounced to the left. The dog raced around the tree but the man cut him off; great bouncings and waggings followed. This is their home-from-work game and they both play whole-heartedly. Rescuing Clair
Meet Clair - after a rough early life as a brood bitch for an irresponsible breeder, Clair was discarded when her breeding days were over. Through a collaboration of the NCA National Rescue Network, High Country, Mesquite and Southern California Regional Clubs and dedicated volunteers, Clair was transported, evaluated, received vet care, training and grooming and has found her new forever family. It has been a long journey for Clair but she has shown the Newfoundland sweetness of temperament every step of the way.

Possibly the most famous Newfoundland in English literature is Nana in Peter Pan, the creation of J.M. Barrie (1860-1936). James Matthew Barrie was a Scottish journalist, playwright and children's book author and was created a baronet in 1913.

Puppy Health Care
Your veterinarian is your first line of defense for your puppy's good health. If your vet knows you are getting a puppy they can offer invaluable pre-puppy advice such as how to puppy proof your home, flea and tick control, various forms of heartworm preventative and vaccination and worming schedules. He will also tell you what information you need to get from your breeder, in addition to the vaccination and worming medication already given, to help keep your puppy on the track to good health.

Nail Trims
To begin with, your puppy has had his toenails trimmed 9-10 times, yes folks, once a week from birth until you took him home. This should continue weekly for the life of your pup. From birth until 10 weeks we used human toenail clippers. From 10 weeks to 4 months we use puppy nail clippers. From 4 months on we use regular dog nail clippers. Make sure your blades are sharp for quick, safe cutting. We replace ours often! In addition, your puppy was bathed and dried before he went to the vet's office for his final checkup.

Trick Dogs Go Virtual
While dog owners are staying at home practicing social distancing and dog trainers are suffering a loss of business, the AKC Family Dog Program is pleased to announce that dog owners may teach their dogs tricks at home and submit a video to an AKC CGC Evaluator for review and approval. This applies to all levels of AKC Trick Dog training.

Your NCA Board of Directors recognizes the value and prevalence of social networking systems, such as Facebook™, email lists, and blogs. Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about owners, breeders, The Newfoundland Club of America and/or Newfoundland fanciers.
