NCA e-Notes October 2021

Veto and President Garfield

While he did not bring his favorite Newfoundland, Veto, to live in the White House, the dog played an important role and was featured in a number of contemporary anecdotes about Garfield's life. "It is unjust to mention the other animals on Gen. Garfield’s farm and say nothing of his big black Newfoundland dog, “Veto.” He is a very kind and intelligent fellow, and seems to share in the genial and hospitable spirit which pervades the premises. He expects recognition from every visitor. Going into the General’s office, once, after a few days absence, I greeted the gentlemen who were there, but did not speak to Veto. He looked at me expectantly from the opposite side of the room for a minute or two, and when, I still failed to speak to him, he saluted me with a bow-wow-wow that was perfectly comical in its peculiar tone of reproof, and then sprang across the room and laid his head on my knee for the customary patting. Financial Oversight Committee
Newfoundland Club of America is seeking members to serve on its Financial Oversight Committee. Active, independent financial oversight is essential to ensuring the Newfoundland Club of America’s current and future financial stability, as well as proper stewardship of the NCA’s financial assets..
You don’t necessarily need to be a financial whiz to be on this committee! But you should possess enough financial literacy to understand basic terminology, read and evaluate financial statements, and be able to ask the right questions in determining the financial health of the organization.

Key responsibilities of this committee are:
·      Review financial policies established by the NCA Board.
·      Regularly evaluating the organization’s financial health
·      Ensuring that the organization is on a financially sustainable path
·      Reviewing the investments of financial assets
·      Reviewing the organization’s financial disclosure statements to the
Internal Revenue Service
·      Other financial oversight responsibilities as determined by the
NCA Board of Directors

If you are an NCA member and are interested in helping the NCA meet its fiduciary responsibilities and goals please send an email with your interest and any experience and background information that you feel would be helpful for the Board to Lynne Anderson-Powell at NCABOD2ndVP@live.com.

NCA Purchasing Chair
The NCA is looking for a volunteer to fill the newly created position of NCA Purchasing Chair. This very important job will help the NCA to reduce expenses and therefore ease the financial burden on the membership.  The Purchasing Chair will report directly to the NCA’s Board of Directors in coordination with the 2nd Vice President.
The ideal candidate will possess business experience, strong interpersonal skills, and the enthusiasm to make a true difference to the club, as well as the future of the breed.
The Purchasing Chair’s responsibilities will include frequent contact with all committees to determine inventory levels of medallions, ribbons, decals, patches, pins, and other items authorized by the NCA Board and then to compile vendor information, including payment terms, delivery cycles, etc. and develop recommendations for approval.
If you would enjoy a challenging opportunity to develop this position from the ground up, we want to hear from you! To let us know you are interested send a brief bio to Lynne Anderson Powell at NCABOD2ndVP@live.com

Nutrition 101
Canine nutrition is an area of growing concern for dog owners in general and giant breed owners in particular. Giant breed puppies will experience a similar rate of growth in a single year to what humans experience over 20 years. Even a short time spent eating an unbalanced diet can have implications for long term growth and development.
"In order to live, a dog must eat. How long the dog lives, as well as health, immune system, behavior and temperament, the ability to reproduce successfully and to recover from trauma, all depend on what is eaten." - Wendy Volhard

Dog Introductions
So, you want to get a puppy but you already have an adult dog - GREAT! Here's some hints that may help with your introduction.
When you first bring puppy home, try to have someone with you to help out and choose a room that has a washable surface. Allow the puppy to sniff the area. These new smells will tell him there is another dog(s) that already lives here and may help to calm him somewhat.
Time is an important factor to consider when bringing in a new puppy. You may want to plan ahead and make the introduction on a long weekend...

Your NCA Board of Directors recognizes the value and prevalence of social networking systems, such as Facebook™, email lists, and blogs. Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about owners, breeders, The Newfoundland Club of America and/or Newfoundland fanciers.
