Many donate blood from healthy young dogs and without updating, those samples will flag internally at OFA as healthy when a scientist inquires. We all need to update the health status of our Newfs with DNA in the repository. If a dog tears a cruciate, bloats, develops laryngeal paralysis, lymphoma, osteosarcoma, hip dysplasia, etc. OFA needs to know so they can flag the sample to show up on internal queries when scientists request samples to study specific diseases. Note that none of this info is put on the dog's public record. It's all internal flagging for database queries at researchers’ requests. Ear issues can be a problem for many Newfoundlands. An infection of the external canal or otitis externa is one of the most common reasons for dogs being presented to the veterinarian. Causes vary and so will the solution to the problem. Normal ears produce a small amount of wax and shouldn’t have an odor. Scratching, shaking the head and a strong odor from the ear can be an indication of an infection.
