Trying to hold a year-round coat when it's 105 in the shade is no easy task. Some exhibitors keep their dogs in air-conditioned garages whenever it is hot. Others use misters to lower the temperature (by as much as 15 degrees) and add humidity.

Check Out These Tips for Summer Coat Care

Are there actually Newfoundlands that don't know how to swim? More than likely, all Newfoundlands know how to swim, but there are some that are too afraid or unwilling to try. Granted some Newfs swim better than others by using their legs more efficiently, but all Newfs can swim, naturally, to some extent.

Gander

A Newfoundland Hero

Gander became the Newfoundland mascot of Quebec City’s Royal Rifles of Canada by chance. He began his life as a puppy named Pal with his family in Gander, Newfoundland. As he grew he spent more and more time at the airport with the soldiers who were assigned there. His family felt he was growing too big and the Royal Rifles willingly adopted him as their mascot. His official name became Regimental Mascot Sgt. Gander. Gander’s new life with the Rifles would cover many miles and ultimately end at the battle of Lye Mun on Hong Kong Island. Read More

Laryngeal Paralysis

The muscles that hold the larynx open against air pressure when the dog breathes in become atrophied allowing the larynx to shut on inspiration. Rear limb weakness and megaesophagus is also associated with this disease. It is seen mostly in older Newfoundlands and Labrador Retrievers.

Cross Training

Like many of you, we have over the years trained our dogs to respond to voice commands and hand signals. Sometimes one or the other was the main effort and the other a backup. Does your Newf understand commands in multiple ways? Voice, hand signal, etc. This great new article talks about just why that can be so important.
