Kurt Schulz, D.V.M., M.S., DACVS, associate professor of surgical and radiological sciences at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, says, "Controlling body weight is the single most important step an owner can take to minimize the risk of cruciate tears." Overweight dogs are also at risk for diabetes, heart disease and hepatic lipidosis.
