Hello all,We are considering fencing in part of our backyard and want to check with you all regarding fence height.  I believe Chris had said something a while ago about it being important that a fence be 6 feet high, though I am not sure if I am remembering correctly.  Does anyone have thoughts on this?  Our Newf would pretty much only be out there while supervised, and the fence would be around an inner part of the yard, not right next to the street.  He's pretty athletic.  He does respect the baby gate in our kitchen which is only about 30 inches tall.  We are wondering if we could get away with a height of 4 feet or so.Thanks!Cathy

We put up a 5 ft vinyl coated chain link fence and neither dog has ever
tried tonget out of it.

I agree.  The biggest issue I have ever had (with fences 4 feet and up, they have jumped the shorter ones) is going UNDER the fence, not over it.

We've always had 4 foot chainlink. For the most part effective with the Newfs.
Had to stake the bottoms as I had one try to go under, but not over.

I have a 6ft chain link fence which is fine at this time of year but, living in a 'snow belt" region of Northern WI, I am glad of the extra height.  Depending on the winter,  the snow can change that to 5ft or less of height.  So far none of my dogs, Newfies, St. Bernards, and Mastiffs have ever tried to go over.  But I have had some of them - usually the Saints - who have managed to squeeze themselves through some very small holes under the fence!!

I've always had 6 ft.  The question I'd have with a lower height is can
they get their elbows hooked over the top?  From there they pull with the
front legs and climb with the back, and they're out.  Easy if it's chain
link.

Will you have intact animals?  They can be very determined when love is in
the air.

Also consider what you are keeping out with the fence.  I've had neighbor
children climb even a 6 ft.

I have to agree with Chris if not properly secured it was easy enough for our dogs to simply push it up as they went under. We ended up with 2" by 10" boards around the bottom and attached fencing to that.  Although we did have a girl that was capable of jumping out of the 6' kennels.  Our 4' fence was just used when we were home and was the front yard so to speak to the 3 six foot kennel areas.
