NCA Breeders- New Program Preparing for Launch

The new Puppy Referral Listing Program will be available to all NCA members to list planned or existing litters or adults for placement. This function is currently in testing, with training being scheduled for Newf Ambassadors shortly. Referral Listing will be available to potential puppy buyers through the Newfoundland Ambassador Program and the Breeder Referral Hotline. In order to set up a listing you will need the registered name/AKC (or foreign) registration number and health clearances for the sire and dam. Your login and password from the member portal will allow you to access the new system. Watch for email notices when demos and Q&A sessions will be scheduled. We will also have links to on-demand videos on using the new system.

Breeders of Distinction Program Launches

The Newfoundland Club of America believes in honoring responsible breeders who have gone above and beyond on health issues, temperament, and genetic screening, as well as to the individual care and placement of puppies in responsible homes. The NCA Breeder of Distinction Program recognizes those breeders who are dedicated to preserving breed characteristics and producing healthy, well-socialized Newfoundlands. We consider them the most conscientious and most committed breeders. Visit the Breeders of Distinction.

The first NCA water trial fun match was held in 1972. Claire Carr wrote the following as an introduction to the rules and regulations that were used at that match: "Keeping in tune with the ideals of our beautiful breed, we here present what we feel is the best set of exercises to help our working Newf be a useful animal to its owner, and to depict to the world at large the diversity and unique talents of the Newfoundland dog."

History of the NCA water Test

Conformation is a word that is misspelled a lot. One easy way to remember its correct spelling is to remember what a dog show is really all about. It is an opportunity to get the opinion of the judge as to how well your dog "conforms" to the standard, the ideal Newfoundland. The dog and bitch who conform the most, win the points for the day. Sounds easy, right?

Owner-Handler Advice

Sebastian's Roo - Water Dog

One thing that I loved about this book was that the story was told from the point of view of Sebastian, a dog who was featured in many videos throughout his life. “Roo” in this story is Sebastian’s name for his special girl, who takes care of him and whom he trusts completely to always be looking out for his best interests. (Every dog deserves to be in a home filled with so much love.)
Even more interesting is the fact that this is not a fictional story: Sebastian was a real dog, and “Roo” was a real girl who raised him. It is clear that this book was a labor of love to honor Sebastian and all that he brought to his family. - Josh Effron

What NOT to Eat

Call your veterinarian if your dog ingests any of the following. If you aren’t sure about whether a particular substance is toxic or if it is ok to induce vomiting, call and ask. If you take your dog in, bring the original packaging so that the veterinarian can see what the active ingredient is. Not all mouse poisons are alike and ibuprofen is not aspirin!

Chewing

Many puppy owners find themselves asking this question, and the answer is a simple one: it depends. (We know; that’s not the answer you want to hear when you’ve returned from work or running errands to find your dog has gnawed some woodwork, or made a shredded mess of your favorite pair of shoes.) “What does it depend on?”

DNA Samples Fuel Research Capacity

If your Newfoundland has experienced a health issue, please consider sending a DNA blood sample to the OFA DNA Repository. This is where researchers will look to find sample sets when preparing to do DNA studies. Breeds that have large sample sizes are more likely to attract studies. Healthy samples are also needed.

Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about owners, breeders, The Newfoundland Club of America and/or Newfoundland fanciers.
