THE SPIRIT OF GIVING

The NCA Charitable Trust is much more than what we do, it is You, Our Donors, for without your support and donations the work we do would not be possible.

Newfoundland Charitable Trust --- 20 Years of Giving

I want to share a familiar story we were faced with in Rescue. Rosie is a 6 year old Newf who came in to rescue with urgent medical needs. She needed foster care and veterinary attention. Caring for a Newfoundland through a surgery and foster care requires time, patience and money. You can provide the care Newfs like Rosie need in her foster home and make sure she is safe and secure for the holidays. Rose was part of a major pull from a commercial breeder. Kept in poor conditions, neglected and ignored. Rose needed to heal and to learn to trust when she entered foster care.

https://imgssl.constantcontact.com/letters/images/sys/S.gif

Every week, Newfoundland rescues across the country face these situations and the hard-working volunteers in our rescue network give up their time and their hearts to help heal the broken souls of Newfoundlands in need, but your donation can provide food, veterinary care, professional grooming for severely matted dogs, and harnesses and other gear to make their lives more comfortable.

Without committed, caring donors like you, Newfs like Rosie and Rose may be stuck in a cold, stressful shelter, or simply euthanized.

Now, imagine for a second that you are a new puppy owner - Mose is everything you have been dreaming of in a Newfoundland pup. We all know the joy, and the sense of unlimited potential we feel when a new pup joins our family. But soon Mose is not as active, having trouble playing and you know something is just not right. Sadly, tests confirm that bright, beautiful baby has Subaortic Stenosis. That sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you know that Mose, your beloved pup is facing a lifetime of limitation, and possibly an early death.

Researchers are working hard to determine the genetic cause for this disease as well as advancing cutting-edge treatments and surgical interventions and every dollar we raise can help them find answers to this and a host of other health issues that our gentle giants can face. Funding a genetic study is a huge financial commitment and your donation can make a difference.

Without the supporters who have funded surgical trials, and a host of other studies, dogs like Mose may never have had the chance to share their unconditional love with their families.

Rosie Blooms After Many Hurdles

Several foster care volunteers, veterinarians and therapists make up the team providing care for Rosie in Ohio. Surrendered to rescue after failed surgery to repair a torn cruciate ligament, Rosie needed extra help. Her surgery had been complicated by infections, and the hard decision was made to amputate Rosie's leg in order to save her life. Now the task of rehabilitiating a giant breed dog to become functional on only three legs is underway.

Susan Kerby, who coordinates Rosie’s care, reports, “She's getting around well and beginning to figure out how to get up on her own. She went out today with my barely supporting her with the sling."

"It’s been a huge team effort, the veterinarians and therapist have been wonderful along with Rescue support to get this dog better. I do think Rosie has a great chance of making a full recovery. She’s happy, eating well, and scoots herself wherever she wants to go.” Susan continued.

As Dr. Clyde Dunphy noted following his review of her treatment protocol, “Rosie is a very lucky dog to have such guardian angels!”

Healing Hearts and Unconditional Love

Mose began life as a puppy full of energy and life, however it was soon discovered that he was affected with a severe form of a genetic heart disease called Sub-Aortic Stenosis. Without treatment Mose’s future looked bleak. However a new treatment developed at the University of Florida with the aid of Research monies from the Newfoundland Club of America Charitable Trust Health Challenge was available at the Veterinary College at Ohio State University. Mose had surgery supported by the NCA Trust Rescue Funds.

and now the rest of Mose’s story...

Mose was cared for after his surgery by foster caregivers until he recovered from his surgery and was able to go to his forever home. At 8 months of age and a playful energetic puppy again, Kurt entered Mose’s life. Kurt knew Newfoundlands as his sister had Newfoundlands for many years so Kurt adopted Mose. Kurt had Golden Retrievers before, however he knew about Mose’s story and thought they would be a good match. Dr. Joe, Mose’s veterinarian, as Kurt calls him, is a Newfoundland owner himself, and has cared for Mose over the last 5 years monitoring his heart and daily medication. Mose lives on a resort of 800 acres where Kurt is a carpenter and Mose accompanies on all his jobs and they walk about a mile before and after work. Mose is quite a character that has a squirrel and two cat friends that he likes to bark at and tease until they chase him away. Mose will be 6 years old in February ’19 and is doing extremely well keeping up with Kurt on their daily adventures.

Kurt told me “Mose has been a blessing in my life, we are brothers” and always together.

Rose : Beautiful Inside and Out

Rose was one of the Precious Newfoundlands that were taken in by Rescue to begin a new life. Deb Fitton, Rose's foster mom (and now forever family) shares her story:

Most of you know the story about how these poor dogs were discovered in a puppy mill and then obtained by Newfoundland Rescue. Our personal story with Rose began in June of 2015 when we agreed to bring her into our family to foster. Still etched in my mind is seeing Rose for the first time, huddled in fear, in the back of the volunteer's vehicle when she arrived at our home.

Little by little, Rose progressed --baby steps all of the way. She learned to eat her dog food while we remained in the same room. She learned to eat canned dog food offered from a spoon. We rejoiced when, over a year later, she took a treat from us for the first time! It took months but we watched Rose go from sleeping in a crouched position to comfortably lying on her side.

Rose has since become a permanent fixture in our home. We officially adopted her on our 40th wedding anniversary as a gift to each other. Simply put, we loved her very much and wanted to make her a part of our family. Rose is still very shy. On the other hand, she is just like any other Newf. She loves Dentastix and every evening after supper, she sits in the kitchen and stares at the top of the refrigerator, waiting for me to offer her one. Rose has also learned that the couch makes a soft place to sleep but when I say that it's time to go to 'nighty-night', she heads down the hallway to the bedroom.

Even though Rose has endured more than any creature should ever have to experience, she has always maintained a sweet temperament. I often say to people that I believe that you could put a pet rabbit in her crate and she would not harm it. The neighbor children love Rose and their voices soften as they pet and talk to her. She is also beautiful to look at. Her jet black coat glistens in the sunshine and she can run like a deer.

Rose is truly a dog that is beautiful both inside and out. When we count our blessings during this holiday season we are thankful for our Rose.

When we count our blessings during this holiday season we are thankful for our Rose. <https://files.constantcontact.com/079f47b8001/079eb1ca-84da-4004-9a37-2f417af96279.jpg> <https://imgssl.constantcontact.com/letters/images/1101116784221/S.gif> For 20 years, the NCA Charitable Trust has diligently to put your donations to work to provide a safe, healthy future for every Newfoundland.
