That measure currently awaits reconciliation and attention from Senate appropriators. This week, an amendment proposed by Senator Dianne Feinstein to the Senate FY 2020 combined "minibus" Appropriation Bill would add the same troublesome provisions to the Senate version. AKC urges you to contact members of the Senate Appropriations Committee and urge them to protect privacy rights by voting against any amendments to the FY 2020 Appropriations Bill that would require USDA to release privately identifiable information about pet breeders as part of the USDA's online Animal Care Information System (ACIS). OFA stated that banked Newf DNA may not be used in research at a rate comparable to other breeds because the individual dog records are not being updated if the dog develops illness post DNA submission. Many donate blood from healthy young dogs and without updating, those samples will flag internally at OFA as healthy when a scientist inquires. What owners need to do is simply update the health status of Newfs with DNA in the repository. If a dog tears a cruciate, bloats, develops laryngeal paralysis, lymphoma, osteosarcoma, hip dysplasia… OFA needs to know so they can flag the sample to show up on internal queries when scientists request samples to study specific diseases. Note that none of this info is put on the dog's visible record. It's all internal flagging for database queries at researchers’ requests. Anyone can update records on DNA already in the system by sending an email to ofa@offa.org with the dog's DNA database number and a request to add the new diagnosis.
